Target Corporation, een van Amerika’s grootste winkelketens, heeft een rechtzaak aan z’n been. Bruce Sexton, een blinde student, heeft het bedrijf aangeklaagd omdat Target’s onlinewinkel niet toegankelijk is voor blinden en slechtzienden. Hoewel ik betwijfel of hij het zal halen ‘ in principe moeten enkel Amerikaanse overheidssites voldoen aan Section 508 ‘ kan ik ‘m natuurlijk wel volgen. Sexton had al sinds mei 2005 contacten met het bedrijf, maar zij toonden geen begrip. Hij zegt:
What I hope is that Target and other online merchants will realize how important it is to reach 1.3 million people in this nation and the growing Baby Boomer population who will also be losing vision.
Vandaag duikt het artikel over de rechtszaak op Digg.com op. Ik ben erg geschrokken van de (meer dan 200!) reacties van de Digg-lezers. Zoveel kortzichtigheid, onverdraagzaamheid en ego’sme. Ik word er eigenlijk een beetje stil van.

Using websites is a privilege and not a civil right.
YOU must adapt YOURSELF to the WORLD. You cannot possibly adapt the world to yourself.
He can’t see the shit in the store either, so what’s the big deal.

As a web designer for government funded agencies almost all my websites have to be accessible under section 508. I can honestly say that it creates almost no burden and the added attention to detail it entails makes all my websites better for the blind and seeing alike. The idea that it has a “chilling effect” on web development is ludicrous. Here are some likely benefits of making a site accessible:
- Better search engine indexing
- Better cross-browser capability
- Better access to your site on mobile devices
- Proper use of alt and title tags provides more info to blind AND sighted individuals (captions, etc)
- Faster download times
- Better access to those who prefer or are required to browse without javascript etc.
- If you’re thinking about accessibility you’re more likely to consider other usability issues as well
- Better accessibility to those with poor eyesight through scalable type etc.
To those of you who think this will ruin the web I ask you a serious question: Do you really think a little attention to detail will make web sites worse?

Jammer dat het een rechtszaak wordt, onrechtsreeks plaatst het blinden in een slecht daglicht en krijgen we domme reacties zoals bovenstaande uitspraken. Evenwel blijkt nog maar eens hoe weinig mensen weten van de meerwaarde dat het biedt voor zowel mensen met een handicap als de alledaagse surfer.
